DIALOGUES—
a daily practice in art and life

Annika Hein & Bobby Clark

Dialogues is a creative exchange spanning one week between two creatives who we invite to share and discuss in note form the art, music, words, and notions that are inspiring them at that moment. Consider it a daily practice, or a morning warm up, between two members of the JANE community as they share with us a excerpt into their views and values.

Here in the WhatsApp chat transcript below creative director and JANE editor Annika Hein and Artist Bobby Clark go back and forth on the idea of home, Leonard Cohen, Tracey Emin, a playlist they are both listening to on repeat and the return of Phoebe Philo.

Annika: I’m trying to send the brief for the chapter but my internet isn’t bloody working!!!
Tying again haha.

Annika: Ok I think that worked. Brief attached. So I thought we could start with the idea of home? “Find the heart’s home and rest there for a while” what’s making you feel at home right now?

November 16, 2023

Bobby: ‎OMG I’m actually so excited to do this with you. I’m trying to rush my to do list out of the way so I can actually get to the fun stuff like this. I’m so excited. The fucking brief is beautiful, it’s absolutely stunning. I hope you had a good day. Love you.

Annika:

Annika: I saw this the other day by Gustav Klimt and made me think of home and how even now James and Vahla when they’re sick or worried or happy even, they want to be close to us… I guess our body was their first home and I wonder if you ever / or rather when you lose that closeness? I hope our bodies are their home forever!

Bobby: YES! Just remembered I had this woooo.

Actual home. Which I’ve not had in a long time. Being so far from home, home country we only really had houses and each other became a home. People became home but now our house is home and I love being there. Our wee unit. Also what we [me and you] built. Our BB club is my home.

It’s the feeling of familiarity. Of safety. I’ve not had that in people in such a long time and I’ve finally come home within myself and with those around me. I’m no longer looking out but looking around.

Bobby: This [Klimt’s drawing] is so beautiful. I love Klimt’s drawings. And that one painting of the family and contorted that makes me laugh because it’s alike a bed full of beautiful limbs. The beauty of it all with a sense of discomfort because we have been turned inside out but have come back with our little babe who need us still and our bodies. Our bodies are their homes now.

Annika: This is so beautiful! Do you think this idea of looking in not out also comes with age too? Like, if you’re lucky, in your 30s you find your people and you settle more into yourself?

The visual of our body being their home! I can imagine you drawing this in your head as you type it.

Booby: Haha I did!

Annika: Knew it.

Annika: Have been listening to this on repeat lately and thought you might like!

Bobby: I had that song on repeat today on my drive!

Annika: stop really? I was playing it all day, It’s so nice!

Bobby: 100% I totally agree with what you said above about age and settling. You see those big groups that have stayed solid through 30s and they settle much quicker right!

Annika: Yesss totally!! I feel so lucky to have a big group now, I’ve never really had it, not since high school.

Bobby: Me neither!

Bobby: I always looks at big tables of friends and wanted it so bad

Annika: Same!! Like this deep yearning

Bobby: My screenshot from today. Thinking about the chaos and blissful mess of motherhood.

Bobby: All wild emotions, then you get a moment as simple as lying in the grass and the noise stops and the sun rays hit you on the perfect spot on your face and then you see your baby. And that little smile. And those big eyes

Annika: I love this! Kirsten Dunst 🤍

Bobby: Yeah, film still from Marie Antoinette

Bobby: Obsessed with mother and daughters

Annika: 🤍🤍 something about the imagery right!

Bobby: Yup! Especially wearing embroidered cotton

Annika: Yum!!

Annika: It’s all relative right! And also the energy of a moment. Like you can be annoyed at a fly or something silly or you can stop and be like holy shit the sun on my skin is so beautiful and warm and the grass must feel so wild to my baby!

Bobby: So true

Bobby: You can get wrapped up in the annoyance or take it all in as a miracle over and over again

Bobby: I love the days when you find a fly cure 😂

Annika: Totally… just a little reframe can change the whole image!

ok I’m signing off… will send a little note in the morn! Love you xx

Bobby:

Bobby: Have this too which summarises exactly how I feel right now.

Annika: The constant push and pull of it all. Exhausting and exhilarating.

November 23, 2023

Annika: Good morning 🤍🤍 I just realized we’ve never spoken about Phoebe Philo!!

We actually don’t get to get properly talk about A LOT of things haha

I want that necklace so badly. Sold out in like eight minutes!

Bobby: OMG I’ve seen so many people wearing that.

Bobby: It’s so sick. I mean back with a bang right!

Annika: And to celebrate motherhood in such an obvious way within an industry that typically makes it insanely hard to “have” both—love.

Annika: also… for you 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍

Annika: Feel like we should have done this on Instagram lol because now I’m just sending you everything that I see and love and feel inspired by haha

Annika: Home on a plate 🤍

Annika: Also would love to know what’s on your “to-read” list haha I know we don’t get to read much, but I also know you’re exactly like me and have a stack of books you’re going to get to one day….tell me 😍

Bobby: My book stack is HUGE! I’ll send you a photo of it when I get home coz it’s almost a full window.

I would love to finish Shuggie Bane
Next: young mungo
Scottish theme

Bobby: Lemme order coffee and get stuck in!

Annika: The top left photograph! It’s amazing!!! the perfect intentional placement of things! I love looking inside peoples spaces seeing how they place things!

Annika: Everything about this!!

Bobby:

Annika: I love doing this with you!!
I will reply soon 🤍🤍🤍

Annika: Listening to those songs now! 💔 so beautiful!

Annika: My book stack…. Three of them from you!

Annika:
I remember when you sent me this, when I just had Vahla and I said to Odin I think this is the nicest present I’ve ever received it was so special. I cried.

Bobby: I love that book so much. I saw it and it just belonged to you. The pages and the words and the photos. I knew you would love it. It’s one of the nicest books I’ve ever seen. I imagine you writing a book like that. If I had to describe you as a book it would be that one. It’s so unique and beautiful.

Annika: It’s the most special book / gift. You know when we had all our things in storage for like a year I still had that book with me. Like I need it to be with me. I love it so much. The paper is so delicate.

Bobby: Funny weather is amazing!!!

Annika: I can’t wait to read it!!!

Annika: I love your handwriting so much! Do you miss writing letters? I used to write letters all the time. I feel like I never have the time anymore, but I would if I just did it!

Annika:

Annika: Something that got me today

Annika: Another song for you x

Bobby: I LOVE THIS SONG! I had it on repeat for so long

November 29, 2023

Bobby:

Annika: 😭 so beautiful! It kind of puts into words why it’s so nice to peak into someone’s house or look through their things or see what random notes and scraps of paper they keep! I love all that stuff!

Bobby: 100% I love being let into people’s real life’s. Their car before it’s cleaned. Their house on a Sunday morning or last thing in the day. Their pockets. Notebooks are so special. Seeing someone’s notebook is like seeing their diary or their head!

Annika: Do you keep all yours? I keep all my notebooks. I saw this video of Lou Doillon’s stories the other day and it was just shelves and shelves of her note books all dated along the spine. Never wanted to read something more.

Annika: for you xxx

Bobby: That’s my home song. It makes me feel so nostalgic and heart full and equally sad.

Bobby:

Annika: I love Leonard so much! This song… Odin uses to play it to Vahla when she was tiny in lockdown.

Annika:

Annika: Bloody love him
