  We can come to understand the definition of stalwart as resolute, determined, committed. Unfaltering, sturdy, and robust. Strongly and stoutly built, fearless and valiant—another of those brave and beautiful words. And in our own way, that’s what we hope we can be too: a stalwart of the arts, in practice and in life.

And so, we dedicate this issue to all incarnations and all iterations of the concept. To the loyal companions and champions of creative living. To the icons and ambassadors of art and culture and literature. To the ones who changed and continue to challenge the prevailing views, and who shape the ways we can create today.

To the camera, the pen, the book, the café (de Flore?), the hotel (Chelsea?). To the way paper smells and pages turn. To the piano and to the one and only Patti Smith. To any of the Agneses, to Georgia, to Joan, to Yoko and Lou. To Neil and Jim and Hilma and Cy. To McQueen, Coco, and Sylvia… And on and on they go.

To the devotees and advocates of art and life, one or many, as they continue to forge the path for us and with us.

To the stalwarts (brave and blindingly beautiful).
